In Port McNeil, BC

Ok I realize that that last blog was a little weird. I was cold. The soup was a little too hot for my cold body. Or something

Anyways, here's a picture of some of the logs that I scaled today. It's beautiful, the sun is warm but it's not too hot (of course, it's Vancouver Island, it never gets too hot). God has just given me the greatest peace. Staring at huge mountains will do that to you sometimes. Here are some more pictures of mountains. Poetry comes much easier when you work all day with that kind of scenery.

Better get some sleep, sunrise comes VERY early.

Jasper, Alberta

Well I left Edmonton early this morning in a drizzle. It was dumping cold rain on me by the time I got to Nipton, AB (The mercury said it was 5C... BRRR).

Well now I'm in Jasper, and there is snow all around the city. It seems like you could just walk up and romp around in it. Of course I'd much rather take pictures of it and get some clam chowder and coffee in me.

Maybe I should describe the highway this far: lots of mountains everywhere. Really big mountains. And the highway is really long and it's really BIG up here. Did I say big? Enough?

And... there are elk everywhere. And other big mammals. And lots of Americans taking pictures of them. My bike make more noise than any of the semis on the road, so the elk usually jump when I drive by. Kinda entertaining usually.

Sharing home dirs between linux and osx

Well I have repartitioned my hard drive on the macbook. This involved using the Tiger startup disk and re-installing osx. At the beginning of the installation you can navigate the menus at the top of the screen and select "Tools" or something, Disk Utility is there and you have free reign on the hard drive. I used 50gb for my "home" partition and 30gb for osx, the rest I'll allocate to linux later on eh?

Ok Well now I want to make sure that OSX is using that partition (I can see it under /Volumes/) as the homes partition. I go:

sudo ditto -rsrcFork /Users /Volumes/home/Users

And then:

sudo niutil -createprop / /users/gavin8or home /Volumes/home/Users/gavin8or

There is a way to do this with the NetInfo gui but that is too complex. At this point I cd into /Volumes/home/gavin8or and make sure everything is there.
Now I can go:

sudo rm -dr /Users
sudo ln -s /Volumes/home/Users /Users

And log out/log back in.

Playing with the macbook

Well, I'm seeing all the new things that Tiger can do. Widgets are not just hype: they can do useful things.
I'm deciding what to do about dual-boot and Virtual Machines. It would be nice if there was Vmware available for osx. But there is a petition online to get Vmware to provide their software to people using osx. *edit: I guess they need to hire engineers... Any takers?
Other than that, there is Parallels Desktop, which costs 50$, and Mac on Mac, which doesn't work on Tiger yet.
I guess I will have to do what I did with my old G4, dual boot linux and osx. And maybe I can get vmware running under linux.

TODO: I'm going to put linux install image (downloading as I type) onto my iPod, and see if it is possible to install directly from the iPod. Mostly because I can't find a CD-R in the room and I'm too lazy to put on pants and go looking for one.

Posting from a widget

Well my macbook has arrived in the mail. And it's now about 2AM and I'm just idly playing with widgets and other things. There are a lot of potential things that you can do with a little knowhow, creativity and coding skills.

I have been using my iPod for the last few days. Listening to Ravi Zacharias and John Macarthur, Doctor Ollila and others would qualify as a good use of time whilst riding my bike to and from school. Try to put it to good use eh?

Found this on my dad's hard drive

Picture of me and some friends getting ready to grill up some venison. What a grand Valentine's day evening that was!

some hockey pics

I posted these pics on a post on modsquadhockey.com but I figure I might as well post them up here. Just some random pics of a game last Octobre.

introductions

I guess I could take a couple minutes to say who I am. Not really a good time cause it's 10:30 and I have to wake up at 6:00 tomorrow morning. But I can make this quick.

I kinda had another blog. It was on my web site. But then I gave my iBook to my dad. So I couldn't use Quanta+ under linux anymore to post... easily. Kind of a pain to convince your friends to install linux just so I could update my blog.... and it's a little bit of a hassle to download the blog file, text edit it, and them re-upload it. Every time you want to blog.

So this bogger site is kind of handy. Um, if you want to know anything about me, my web site is probably a good place to start.

My motorcycle is probably a write-off

Today was sucky. I was stopped at the intersection of the Yellowhead Highway and 97th street. There are 2 lanes and I was in the right lane. When the light turned green I and the car to my left drove across 97th street, heading west-bound towards the Yellowhead onramp. A car who had apparently been southbound on 97th but trying to left-turn onto the Eastbound Yellowhead came flying into our lanes, going about 20km/h in reverse. What a moron.

The car to my left saw him first and slammed on the brakes, stopping just inches from the idiot's driver door. When he entered my lane, he saw his error and put on the brakes, but not before his back bumper smashed a hole in my engine. I didn't have time to stop, only to lay the bike down somewhat and get off of it.

Note to my motorcycling friends: you can duck-tape a 4 inch hole in your crank case and probably drive your bike 30-40 minutes. But you will lose some oil. I have spent most of my day doing emergency surgury to my GR650, one of my best companions. I think I might of screwed up the liquid gasket. :(

I'm happy I'm not hurt. My leg hurts but I'm not in the hospital. I'm just torqued that guys would try manuevering busy intersections in reverse like that. He was going fast enough in reverse to knock me out for the day.

There's my grumbling.
